The 2nd of March 2002, The Arts Centre, Commercial Street, London. The
launch gig celebration, general back slapping orgy, for The TwoMinutemen
compilation should of been more chaotic than it turned out. It went so
smoothly that the majority of the Worlds Powers have been in contact with us
for advice on what one should do in a brewery.
The first band, Cove went on at 6pm in front of an already full expectant room and rocked in an
angular, mathy, styleee. They get better with each viewing, check out their
releases on the UnLabel label.
Southall Riot started their set with a GBV
song, there is no better way of ingratiating yourself to the Jonson Family
camp than by paying the Pollard man the respect he deserves. The Riot chaps
were getting better and better as each minute went by, just as they were
really beginning to cook we pulled the plug on 'em! Ha! No one's getting
more than 20 minutes today my friends.
Short Wave TV were up next, 66% of
Cove and 66% of 10-5 Neuton. Jof, the frontman, was INTENSE, the rhythm was
solid. A cross between The Stooges + Unwound??? Oh Yes, good stuff indeed,
but that's what comes of growing up in the shadow of Alistair Crowley down
in Hastings.
Jet Johnson followed, folky, dreamy, Polka's and
Norwegian/Russian folk songs?? Another band who are getting better all the
time. With slightly angular guitar action underneath a slightly dreamy
positive voice, very tricky to pinpoint actually but check out the record
and dig 'em!
Left Hand came on in a blaze of microphone lobbing Gang Of Four
meets Wire meets Magazine meets fire and brimstone. They left in a blaze of
microphone lobbing and Charlton FC beating Chelsea, if you get me? They
ruled.
Stanton came on, swore, covered a Mekons song played as fast and
jerky as they possibly could and left the stage. Sporting the Jonson T Shirt
one and all, it was obvious it was they that had organised it all and they
were going to cry if they wanted too.
Reynolds, due to release their second
album, were full of the joys of Spring. An instrumental Shellac meets
something faster than an instrumental Shellac entertained what was now a
fairly inebriated, Pizza munching crowd. All of whom seemed to punch the air
and whoop in the correct places. Weird, maybe some people had seen them
before?? Maybe some bands need to be given a support slot with Starsailer or
Travis or Bush or The Stereophonics or Haven just to teach both bands and
audience what ROCKING is???
The very same thing could be said for Aqua
Vista, instrumental surf punk rock played by three humans of no fixed abode
(other than Derby??). Mightily bugger gripped drummer, splendidly
Sparksesque bassist, quiffed up guitar mangler, all decked out in rather
fetching full on bright red suits just spanked us all with VOLUME + ENERGY.
We all quivered in their growing shadows.
The fat lady was just beginning to
clear her throat when Econoline appeared stage right. There isn't a week
goes by without Econoline playing, but they won't be playing the Arts Centre
again after being pronounced 'Too LOUD to ever darken the establishments
doors again' (!) The term Emo has long since lost it's meaning so we can't
use it here, but we can say...Braid, Built To Spill and The Get Up Kids and
I think you'll get our point. Econoline are becoming tighter than a gnats
chuff hole these days but that's what getting out and doing it does for you.
That was it, all over. GIG END. To all the bands that played we doff our
caps. To all the people who made the event sell out we bow and gingerly
shake your hands. Cheers.
